Kaito was apprehensive of the idea that his mother should return home so soon after the nerve-wracking and nightmarish confrontation he'd had at that construction site with the organization. Surely, with the return of Kaitou Kid they would keep a close eye on the previous Kid's widowed wife. Surely, they'd find it suspicious. Surely his mother knew that. He couldn't say anything though as she brought with that friend from the states. He greeted his mom at the door with a hug and kiss before offering to take her bags. It wasn't until he came downstairs again that he discovered his mother had not come alone.
The woman before him looked to be about the same age as his mother. She had bright green, exuberant eyes and light brown wavy hair. She was tall, her height assisted by the high heels adorned on her feet. She was a very beautiful woman but Kaito couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. He immediately distrusted the woman. She was hiding something and he could tell.
"Kaito, this is mommy's new friend from Las Vegas, Toya Key." Chikage introduced them. "Toya, this is my son, Kaito." Both Kaito and Toya stared at each other, neither daring to speak as an unsettling and awkward tension seemed to hang between him. Kaito felt trapped in this woman's eyes-it felt as though she were seizing him up and looking passed all the masks and could easily see inside him to his true thoughts and emotions. It wasn't a comfortable feeling, especially since when he tried to pull the same trick he couldn't read a damn thing on Toya's face. Finally, she broke the silence first.
"Nice to meet you, Kaito-kun. Your mother has told me all about you of course." Not wanting to be rude, Kaito nodded.
"Y-yeah, nice to meet you, too Key-san." He said nothing about his mother though, as she had completely neglected to ever refer to Toya as anything more than 'her friend.' She hadn't even mentioned the woman's name. That also made Kaito highly suspicious of her. He shook hands with her and excused himself to his room as politely as possible so as to not upset his mother or offend her friend.
"Oh Kaito!" Chikage called after him just as he reached the top of the stairs. Kaito paused, fearing she had caught on to his discomfort. It wasn't as if he should have expected to get away with it. If anyone could catch him in a lie or see passed his masks it was his mother. And apparently Toya, he thought bitterly before turning to face his mother with a feigned innocent look as though he hadn't just been thinking negatively of her new friend.
"Yeah?" This time he could feel his mother's eyes boring into him, though it was decidedly different when she did it. It was gentle, as though she was trying to assure him everything would be okay, as though through hacking into his mind she was trying to comfort him. He wasn't quite ready to get over the perfect stranger in his house and pulled his eyes away from her so she couldn't work that weird and slightly unnerving trick.
"…We have some relatives to visit. Be ready in an hour?" Her voice reflected quite clearly that his avoidance had hurt her.
Relatives? Kaito wondered but nodded all the same before disappearing onto the top floor, trying not think about that awkward moment he'd just had with his mom so soon after she had returned home.
Chikage returned to the kitchen where Toya was and offered her an apologetic smile, moving over to the cupboard to collect the necessary things to make a strong cup of tea. Both she and Toya would need it after that exchange. The other woman was still standing in the same place she was when Kaito had dismissed himself as if stunned by the obvious rejection. Chikage set the cups on the counter and moved to link her arm with Toya's, the movement meant to be some kind of reassurance.
"…He's upset. He doesn't trust me." Toya remarked, a kind of hollowness in her voice that she couldn't and wouldn't mask in the presence of Chikage.
"He's surprised." Chikage stated. "I didn't warn him about you so the whole introduction was more of a shock to him. After what he's been through, do you blame him for being so on edge? You would be too…" She tried to console the other woman. "And you can't forget he doesn't know." These words, at least seemed to have a slight affect in the right direction as Toya relaxed, though her eyes flickered over to the door Kaito had left out of.
"No…" She said distantly. "No, and he can't know. Not until this has blown over." She took a calming breath.
"Kaito will understand." Chikage said soothingly, gently caressing Toya's arm. "He'll understand, I'm sure of it." But her voice didn't sound decisive and that did not even come close to escaping Toya's notice.
